Flight #2003-2 "DSC-1"
Launch Date: June 27th, 2003
June 27, 2003
A 3000g balloon was flown today with a payload designed and built by
students in a science camp from the Dakota Science Center. The payload
consisted of two 35mm cameras, a raw egg in a protective foam case, a
wristwatch, and a temperature and pressure logger. The balloon group
added our APRS payload to provide tracking, cut-down, and parachute
capability. The balloon was launched at 11:30 am, ascended to 81,000
feet, and landed in a ditch near the road. One 35mm camera was
defective, but the other provided good pictures. The egg survived the
trip with no breakage during the flight or descent.
GPS experienced a few problems, but was mostly reliable. Flight transmitter
power was accidentally switched to 'low', causing trouble for chasers to get
good packets on their terminals. Most packets received with the help of a
mobile Yagi beam antenna.
